A house divided -

Have you ever been grocery shopping and just spent some time peeking in other people's baskets. You come across someone whose basket is filled with fresh produce and organic everything and you think, that is probably a pretty healthy person. Then you come across someone who has 3 12 packs of coke, chips, and an assortment of frozen pizzas and you may think, that person is probably not so healthy. Well I am a house divided. I was shopping today at HEB. As you know it is hard to lose weight without the proper foods at your disposal. So I was making sure I had everything I needed. Sugar free, fat free fudge bars to curb the chocolate craving. Protein bars for those on the go times. Lean Cuisines for a fast meal. Boneless, skinless chicken for cooking meals. Light dressings, fat free whip cream, fresh fruits and veggies. So on and so forth. Then I also had Oreos for Billy's late night sweet tooth. Hot dogs and sugary cereal. Sugar for Billy's sweet tea. Some treats for the girls and some other crap. So if someone looks in my basket they will see what the Bible calls a house divided. Do any of you have this problem? I am not saying cook unhealthily or feed our families trash. But they are not overweight, shouldn't they have some indulgences that they like. What do you think?

I am a house divided.

Just today for lunch I made hotdogs and chips for the kids and Randy. Then I made my Lean Cuisine and ate Baked Lays.

I've tossed the idea around several times on what to do. Of course I would like to say that we're all going to eat healthy from now on, but I just don't know right now if I can be strong enough to eat the things I need to eat at the same time as putting up a fight with everyone else in the house about the entire change of diet. Maybe when I'm closer to my goal I can then make the switch for the whole family. Today, we're a house divided. I would eventually like us to ALL be eating healthy.

I will never forget something that Amy Yates said about the subject. She said that she used to fix all the yummy unhealthy meat and potatoes kind of meals that Jarod liked and then she felt like God told her that she was a steward of her household and her family's health was up to her. She decided to do what she could from then on to make sure that she was feeding her family things that would build them up and not tear them down.
I know, not the most popular answer. I haven't yet figured out how to do it in my own household. But that's my goal.

We have pretty much changed the eating habits of everyone. Kevin and I both struggled with weight at different times growing up and while the girls are not overweight in the least now I want to keep it that way. Now certainly, they get treats and I do have a bag of white meat chicken nuggets in the freezer -- but overall I want them to eat well. Also, Kevin and I often talk about how much easier it would be if we had been raised eating well instead of raised eating junk! I wasn't overweight in the least until my late teen years so I know it seemed pretty harmless when I was Lydianna's age. So...we really aren't a house divided. We have been switching over to everything whole wheat, more organics, no processed sugar, and I think its good for them too!

This is a very difficult question. To me, eating healthy and eating to loosing weight are two separate issues, although they of course cross over each other and the best way to loose weight, is to eat healthy. I know God will show you the best way to influence your family the most life giving way and where you would have to control to change, you will be able to leave it in the hands of God. I believe all families have this struggle. As I apply the struggle to my life, I hear "it is more important to be righteous than right". God is leading me to apply this phrase to quite a few areas of life. xoxo

That is a tough one. I have allowed a lot of indulgences for my kids in the past mostly for wrong reasons (guilt, wanting to make them happy, etc.) and if it were completely up to me, they would still have more of the comforting junk food than they should. But my wonderful disciplined husband put his foot down on many of the things the kids and we were eating and we all feel really good about it now. Of course my boys were on track to an unhealthy weight with dangerous affects and Sarah was a sugar fiend. Now we all feel really good about the changes and teaching the kids better eating habits, the kids love wheat bread, crystal lite, diet sodas, yogurt, healthy cereal and fruits. We try not to buy sugary treats and keep the fatty and processed foods to a minimum. I like Amy's sentiment also, it goes back to discipline for me and luckily I have a strong partner. I also it is harder when we didn't grow up eating more healthy. Plus, it is hard enough to change your eating habits without temptations in your reach.

P.S. Have you seen, Honey, we're killing the Kids ? That will make you think.
